Purpose of the Hall of Fame
The UBC Sport Hall of Fame is designed to serve several
purposes. Not only does it acknowledge UBC's outstanding
athletes and their accomplishments, but it serves to inspire
those who visit it. It will be a resource centre to all,
readily accessible so as to facilitate the awareness of
UBC and its rich history.
There is also a desire to provide a vehicle for the Alumni
to reconnect with athletics on campus and to relive their
good times at UBC. Instead of the UBC accomplishments and
heroes being forgotten, the Hall of Fame will recognize
them, preserve them, and make them available to all who
are interested. Pride in UBC will be maintained with the
permanent acknowledgement of those who helped establish
this pride, while at a younger UBC.
History of UBC's Athletic Hall of Fame
The idea of a UBC Hall of Fame was introduced by Bob Hindmarch
in 1989 and it would be September of that year that he would
hire sports historian and UBC graduate Fred Hume to create
and oversee this "shrine" to UBC's nearly 100 years of athletic
history.
The first inductions into the Hall were celebrated in 1993
and with each year since, additional UBC athletes, builders
and teams of unparalleled quality have been embraced, the
product of a careful research and selection committee process.
From 1995 until 2000, the Hall of Fame induction banquets
were an amalgamation of the Athletic Department with the
UBC Alumni Association. In 2002, the UBC Hall of Fame joined
the Big Block Club for induction ceremonies at their common
venue, the Hyatt Regency Hotel. In addition, 2002 saw the
Hall of Fame itself unveiled in the foyer of the War Memorial
Gymnasium, complimented by this information resource website.
